Privacy Policy
After Incarceration is a fiscally sponsored project of the Movement Strategy Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This policy explains what information our mobile app collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. We wrote this in plain language on purpose. If anything is unclear, reach out to us at info@afterincarceration.org.
What we collect
Account information. When you tap in, we collect your email address and a display name. You can also choose to add a phone number, date of birth, and preferred language. These fields are optional.
Things you post. If you post on The Gate (our community space), we store the text, any image you attach, the topic you chose, and your display name. Other signed-in users can see your posts. You can delete your own posts at any time.
Community safety (blocks and reports). You can block any member, which hides their posts from you. You can unblock anyone in your profile. You can report a post as harassment, hate speech, explicit content, violence, or spam. Our team reviews reports within 24 hours and removes content that violates our guidelines. Blocks you create are private — the other person is not notified.
Community concerns. If you tell us what issues matter to you through the in-app form, we store that text and tie it to your account so our staff can follow up when patterns emerge.
Subscriber gifts. If you opt in to the quarterly physical gift, we collect a mailing address so we can send the gift. You can remove this address at any time. If you do not opt in, we do not collect an address.
Complaints and reports — your identity stays private. This is a core commitment of ours. If you use the app to make a complaint or report, your identity is never published alongside it.
There are two places in the app where you can submit this kind of information:
- Prison Guard Brutality Database. We split this into two parts. Public fields (facility name, state, incident date, type, description, optional officer name or outcome) are what others can see once our staff publishes the report. Private fields (your name, email, optional phone) are stored in a separate restricted table with database-level access rules that block every ordinary user of the app — even a technically skilled one — from reading them. Only authorized After Incarceration staff can see who filed a report, and only when necessary to follow up with you.
- Hold Them Accountable (complaint tool). This tool helps you figure out the right agency to contact about a landlord, business, or government actor. You do the filing yourself directly with the agency. We do not route the complaint for you, and we do not store the complaint text or the target's information on our servers. If in the future we add a feature that logs anything, we will update this policy and keep complainant identity private the same way we do for brutality reports.
If we are ever legally compelled by a valid court order to disclose private complaint information, we will tell you first if we are lawfully able to.
Subscription status. When you subscribe through Apple or Google in-app purchase, Apple or Google processes the payment. We never see your card number. We receive a transaction identifier from our subscription service (RevenueCat) so the app knows you are a subscriber.
Device and log data. Like most apps, our servers record basic technical information when the app connects — for example, IP address and timestamps. We use this only for security and to keep the app running.
What we do NOT do
- We do not sell your data. Ever.
- We do not run advertising or ad tracking in the app.
- We do not use third-party analytics that build a behavioral profile of you.
- We do not share your brutality report identity with anyone outside of authorized After Incarceration staff, unless we are legally required to.
Who processes data for us
We use a small number of trusted services to run the app. Each one only sees the data it needs to do its job:
- Supabase — stores your account, posts, and reports in our database.
- RevenueCat — tracks whether you are an active subscriber.
- Apple and Google — process in-app purchases.
- Eventbrite — provides early-access tickets for events when you choose to use them.
- Google Drive — hosts our exclusive subscriber video content.
How we protect what you share
All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted. Reporter identity for brutality reports is stored in a separate table with database rules that block public access at the infrastructure level — not just in the app code. We give access to team members only when they need it to do their work.
No system is perfectly secure. If we ever learn of a breach affecting your information, we will tell you and the appropriate authorities as required by law.
How long we keep things
- Your account and posts: until you delete them or ask us to delete your account.
- Mailing address: until you remove it or opt out of gifts.
- Brutality reports: kept as part of the public record. If you want your private contact information removed from an existing report, email us and we will remove it.
- Backups: up to 90 days after deletion, then permanently removed.
Your choices
- See your data. Email info@afterincarceration.org and we will send you a copy.
- Fix or delete your data. You can edit most fields in the app. To delete your whole account, email us and we will delete it within 30 days.
- Opt out of the gift mailing. Turn off "Art Giveaway" in your profile.
- Cancel subscription. Manage your subscription in the App Store or Google Play. Cancellation is honored immediately for renewals.
Child Safety Standards
After Incarceration is intended for users 18 years of age and older. This app is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
Zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation. We prohibit, and have zero tolerance for, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and any content that sexualizes, exploits, or endangers children. This includes, without limitation:
- Content that depicts, promotes, or facilitates the sexual abuse or exploitation of minors
- Grooming behavior or any attempt to contact a minor for sexual purposes
- Sexualized depictions of minors, whether real, animated, or generated
- Sharing, linking to, or requesting child sexual abuse material
How we enforce this.
- Report tool. Every community post in the app has a Report button. Any user can report content they believe violates this standard. Reports are reviewed by our staff within 24 hours.
- Block tool. Any user can block any other user at any time from the post's menu or from the Blocked Members list in Profile.
- Account termination. Any account that posts, shares, or requests CSAM or engages in grooming is permanently terminated.
- Legal reporting. We report suspected CSAM to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as required by U.S. law (18 U.S.C. § 2258A), and we cooperate with law enforcement investigations.
- Data preservation. We preserve reported content and associated metadata as required for law enforcement review.
Report child safety concerns. If you see content or behavior in the app that endangers a child, use the in-app Report button on the post, or email info@afterincarceration.org with the subject line "Child Safety." We respond to child safety reports within 24 hours.
If a child is in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement (911 in the U.S.) or the CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org / 1-800-843-5678.
If you believe a child has signed up for an account, email us at info@afterincarceration.org and we will remove the account.
People outside the United States
We operate in the United States. If you use the app from another country, the information you share will be processed in the United States under U.S. law.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will post the new version here and update the effective date at the top. For significant changes, we will notify you in the app.
